Action Research Books includes two book series edited by UEPI Executive Director Robert Gottlieb and published by MIT Press, and has the goal of creating a space for dialog between academics, community organizations, students, experts, activists and others regarding the interconnectedness of social and environmental issues. California Farm to School coordinates and facilitates California Farm to School programs, policies, and outreach (cafarmtoschool.org)

 

Edible Landscapes and Affordable Housing partners with affordable housing developers to develop and evaluate edible landscapes and community gardens as healthy food sources.

 

Environmental Justice and Growth addresses problems and issues with an environmental justice framework to ensure that urban development and growth meet simultaneous environmental, economic, and social goals set by communities. 

 

Farm to Preschool influences early childhood eating habits and bring farm fresh foods to preschoolers and their families.

 

Farm to WIC brings local farm produce into stores that serve Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) recipients and improves access to and consumption of fresh foods in underserved areas.

 

FoodCorps UEPI is one of five organizations involved in planning the development of a FoodCorps program as part of AmeriCorps to develop school gardens, farm to school programs and other food programs.

 

Food and Transportation works with community partners and the L.A. Community Redevelopment Agency to evaluate and improve transportation infrastructure as it relates to increasing access to healthy food.

 

Global Trade and Goods Movement collaborates with community and academic partners as part of Trade, Health, and Environment Impact Project (THEImpactProject.org) and also engages in research and evaluation of national efforts to address community-based health and environmental advocacy related to global trade and goods movement corridors throughout the U.S.

 

Grocery Accountability Project engages in research, policy development, and coalition-building work to raise standards and increase accountability in the supermarket industry.

 

Health Justice  participates in collaboratives and partnerships that address health equity and health justice issues.

 

Healthy School Food Coalition organizes students, parents, community members, school officials and others to improve and transform the school food environment in LAUSD and other school districts

 

Housing Justice engages in research and action around affordable housing and runs a summer internship program for students.

Media Democracy co-hosts the annual Media Reform Summit in Southern California and provides social media training and technical assistance for community-based organizations.

 

Migration Policy and Resource Project engages in policy and technical assistance initiatives involving issues of migration/immigration and social change across borders.

 

National Farm to School Network coordinates and facilitates farm to school programs in 50 states and with 8 regional lead organizations. UEPI co-directs the NFSN with the Community Food Security Coalition. (farmtoschool.org)

 

Pollution Prevention engages in research, policy and project development regarding green alternatives, notably in the dry cleaning industry and maintains a database of environmentally-friendly cleaners for consumers (igreenclean.org).

 

Prepared for School works with distributors to establish a local school food distribution system in Southern California, and explore and help inform similar initiatives nationally.

 

Regional Food Hubs works with partners in Southern California to establish more efficient the distribution of local and regional fresh foods and to establish green jobs through the processing and marketing of those foods.

 

Sustainable Oxy is an expansive campus greening program that includes the formation of a campus-wide Sustainability Committee, programs like bike-share and Zipcar, and a student-initiated Sustainability Fund.

 

Urban & Environmental Policy Department is the academic program at Occidental College that has a strong community-based learning and action research focus.

 

Urban Nature engages in research and collaboration regarding issues of parks and equity and other urban green spaces.
