AIRE Evaluation

As part of the National Science Foundation AIRE grant effort, Occidental College commissioned the Center for Management and Organization Development at California State University, Northridge, under the direction of Dr. Phil Gorman of CSUN and Dr. Andrea Gorman of Occidental College, to prepare an assessment of the 1999 NSF-AIRE Summer Research Program at Occidental. Here we present a brief summary of that report.

The summary ratings of the extent to which the overall goals of the the AIRE summer research projects have been achieved appear in a table listed below. It is important to remember that the extent to which these goals were achieved in each individual research project varied widely. We intended in our discussions to convey a sense of roughly how wide this variance was, and what the 'average' level or achievement was, for each of the respective goals.

Goal #1: Promote student scientific learning

Goal #2: Provide students the opportunity to gain ‘tacit knowledge’ from faculty

Goal #3: Help students develop/clarify career directions

Goal #4: Involve students in research teams with both horizontal and vertical breadth

Goal #5: Enable and encourage students to disseminate their research findings
