Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research
|
"The practice of scientific research is governed by an implicit
ethical code essential to its proper function. This code is a
refinement of that which operates in society at large, but has its special
features and problems. It is useful to those entering the field to
have this ethos made explicit, and also to have discussed some of the
characteristic difficulties encountered in its practice." Ira B. Bernstein, Yale

One of our program’s goals is to engage our students with the “real world” of scholarship and research and enable them to develop their ability as a scholar in all the dimensions implied by that term. Scholarship and research require responsible behavior, and to that end, two of our weekly Summer Research Seminars are devoted to the topic of research ethics. We are posting here some of the documents used in those seminars, for use in group discussions of the Summer Research Program.
NSF funded researchers should obtain from the URC a copy of The Responsible Researcher: Paths and Pitfalls and a copy of the most recent summer's Research Ethics Notebook, and should complete the appropriate web-based PEERRS training, review the College Policy on Research Misconduct and the Training Policy, and obtain any appropriate IRB approval.
